Our first Central Florida Basketball Team Camp was a huge success!
There were 9 varsity boys basketball teams from the central Florida area in attendance comprised of approximately 150 players and coaches.
Beginning on June 27 and ending on June 29 each team played two regulation games per day, but while they were not playing they were challenged by a variety of speakers. On Tuesday, Parents Against Prescription Abuse led by Jim Millar, Bill Rennard, and Dan Phillips spoke to the teams about the dangers of prescription drug overdose. Each of those men had sons who committed suicide by this very thing and their heart is to let other teenagers know how real this problem is.
Wednesday, former FSU basketball player Michael Saxton was our guest speaker and I was also able to share a brief testimony and present the gospel. It was a powerful time and the boys were very attentive and receptive.
Thursday, Robert Stuart spoke to the teams. Robert is the President of the Christian Service Center which provides 500 meals a day to those in need. He is also a City of Orlando Commissioner who has a heart for youth. In his presentation to the teams he emphasized the importance of sacrifice, commitment, and dedication to the team by sharing personal experiences of when he was a basketball player at Edgewater and then at the University of Florida. He then invited the teams to set up a time to come and serve and build relationships with those who are less fortunate in our community.
If you are interested in having a team participate in this Team Camp (both boys and girls teams) in the summer of 2018, please contact Mark Rickman.
